How can Harper get away with this...maybe he wont..there might be quite a backlash, not just for the CBC, but if gives Asper's Global and CTV money. All I know, is, it makes me cry.
Cari, I think the backlash is building, albeit quietly.
It's a little louder in Quebec and maybe that will encourage others.
James Moore is spinning out of control on this and the other day I saw a flash of temper, which is unusual for him. That tells me they are worried about how this plays out.
Ironically, the best way to get a campaign going would be on the CBC with shows like As It Happens, etc.
I suspect remote regions of the country will start making their voices heard. Stay tuned.
When you look at the scope and magnitude of what is being cut from the CBC (French language radio programming, Blue Jays games scuttled and other sports programming reduced or eliminated, popular television sitcoms scaled back, etc, etc, ETC!! You really have to wonder HOW this is NOT a premeditated attack on our Canadian culture.
No of course you're not. You're just some anonymous commenter that happened on by to chime in on what the current government is doing to out PUBLIC broadcaster.
Fundraiser? It is OUR funds that we're talking about, or is that a bit much for you to understand?
The "backlash" is all in your minds, I'm sorry to say. The public is NOT behind the CBC, and hasn't been for years. Having a private broadcaster that only espouses left-wing (or right-wing) viewpoints is fine, because people can either support or ignore it as they see fit.
Having a *public* broadcaster doing the same is outrageous and should not be tolerated in a free society.
62% of the voters voted for parties that take a strong position on the cbc and support it. A minority narrow minded govt that wants to fight an unwanted culture war with 37% backing is outrageous and should not be tolerated in a free society.
CanWest is a public corporation that took its share value from $6 to pennies per share in about a year. They now want to do the same with tax payer money.
Robert, Fred has this tendency to put things out there in the belief that if he writes, it'll become true.
Nationwide, about 76% of the 1,201 respondents said they either supported CBC's current funding levels (52%) or favoured an increase (24%). About 14% said they favoured cutting the CBC's budget. Of those who identified themselves as Conservatives, 68% said they favoured either the funding status quo or an increase. The poll has a 2.8-percentage-point margin of error 19 times out of 20.
As for your delusion that the CBC only espouses left wing views, well when you live in your world, everything other than what you say is 'left wing' I guess. Mainstream may be left of you, but it's not 'left-wing'.
That, Fred, came from the pages of the National Post, in the Fall.
"62% of the voters voted for parties that take a strong position on the cbc and support it."
The election was not fought on the viability or support for the CBC. I respectfully submit that this statement may be too presumptious...support for a particular party does not necessarily translate into support for a particular institution.
It works for me as a general principles. Of course you can't know individual sentiments in detail. However the Conservative Party and conservatives in general are the only ones who speak in terms of eliminating the cbc. None of the other parties talk that way.
I'm an artist with an interest in politics.
I'm also Charles A. Brown's granddaughter. He served WW1 - 73rd Battalion CEF, then later in the RAF. I'm afraid he kept his battles with the Red Baron a secret.

If you're all so worried about the cuts, why don't you Libs all get together, have a fundraiser and send the money to the CBC?
I've never heard such whiners in my life...and no, I'm not a Con party member.

Why doesn't Asper do the same for his shitbag PRIVATE media corporation?

Good investment?
